suddenly stopped providing useful information...let's see.

Laptop: TOSHIBA TECRA 500 CDT

PCMCIA #1 : 3com card MODEL 3CCE589ET 16 bits (Ethernet?)
PCMCIA #2 : Atheros 32 bits card MODEL PPD-AR5BCB31 (Wireless?)

First, each card one at a time runs fine in OpenBSD 3.8. Using both 
cards at the same time also works?

Second, each card one at a time runs fine in ????. However, using both 
cards the laptop detects only one. Which one? Is it always the same? 
Does it matter if you swap them?

Am I understood your problem correctly?

Have you tried with Toshiba Installation Infos?

If they don't mention anything may be you should tell them about your 
progress so others (and yourself) can find the information later. 
Perhaps they even decide to spent a little money or pay a kernel dev for 
fixing whatever problem you reported.
