So this excludes an X-related issue.
Here's what I would do in your place:
Boot up a (Free-)DOS floppy (in case you have no FDD
you can get a FreeDOS-CD from http://freedos.org ),
in order to see if the symptom is software-related
(driver?, kernel?).
If the symptom remains you should check your hardware,
otherwise we'll have to see about software/configura-
tion issues.
