I also have an ALPS touchpad, but without wheel.
I have avoided using the synaptics driver with X because I have experienced
some problems with tapping, and the motion did not seem so precise as with
a common "explorerps/2" driver.

Try it to see if you like it.
SuSE automatically configures ALPS touchpads to use the synaptics driver.
