I had a similar problem with KDE 3.4 on Mandriva 2006 (satellite A70).
It got so bad that the machine would shut down about 5 minutes after
boot. From what I was able to discover, the problem is with the KNotify
applet. I finally had to take the battery out, run on AC and do a
re-install because the machine wouldn't run long enough to complete a
repair. The problem re-appeared after the re-install, so I bit the
bullet and switched to Ubuntu and Gnome. I grant you that its not the
solution I would have preferred, but I really didn't have much of a
choice -- I needed to have the machine working ASAP.
