If it's not, you might want to flash it with the current version (which would be downloadable from Toshiba's web site). Story. I inherited a fairly new Satellite 5101-S501 that had been turned in by a colleague due overheating. It had cooked a hard drive and was accompanied by 3 extra battery packs which had been part of the previous salvage effort. A web search showed a considerable amount of hate mail due overheating for this model along with the clues that the source was some kind of mismatch between CPU and BIOS that was preventing the fans from turning on. New BIOS did indeed fix the problem. Been running various flavors of Linux ever since ... most recently installed Fedora Core 5 from DVD.
