Also try a variety of Linux distros. SuSE10.0 did not recognize the drive controller chipset in my Portege M400 but the pre-release of SuSE10.1 did. Ubuntu (with a little coaxing) was also able to recognize it. I also got the "No hard drives found" type error until I got a distro new enough to recognize the new chipset.
