[tlinux-users:07889] Modem in A105-S4004

I have found out how to use the modem in my A105-S4004 laptop under
Linux. With a combination of the snd-hda-intel ALSA sound driver and
the slmodemd daemon, the modem works. I still have some playing
around to do, because right now I do not hear the modem dial, but it
does dial and connect. What I had to do was run "slmodemd --alsa
hw:0,6 --country USA" and the modem becomes /dev/ttySL0. You can
also use modem:6 in place of hw:0,6. The slmodemd command may be
different for other laptops. The key to finding it out is to run
"aplay -l" to find out where ALSA has the modem mapped. In my case,
it is card 0, device 6, and the audio is card 0, device 0. I do not
have any other devices. You do have to specify the device used,
because it apears to try card 1 and modem:1 by default. You also
have to make sure that slmodemd was compiled with the ALSA option.
(I downloaded an RPM for FC5 already compiled this way.)

While I am not sure, I would expect that all A105 models will work
with the same options. If the list is interested in it, I can go
into more detail later. I hope to write it all up and post it on my
web site when I am done, but that may be a while. I know how
frustrating it can be trying to get things working, so I though I
would pass on what I have so far, so others can start playing with
it as well.

Things I have to do yet:

Find out the mixer/modem settings so that I can hear it dial - this
may just be something like ATM0 or ATM1, but I have not had time to
play.

Find out what serial status line the driver supports. I have found
that it does not have modem carrier detect. Also, setserial can not
report on /dev/ttySL0.

Figure out what the Caller ID button in the mixer does. The ON HOOK
button will hang up the modem.

Probably a bunch of things I have not thought of yet.
