I have it set to suspend to memory if I close the lid. (acpitool -s) It suspends fine in both the cli and GUI mode. But X locks up after resuming. It does this both when I suspend from X or from the cli and switch to X. I have not tried changing to run level 3, suspending, and switching back to run level 5.
