You may also have to specify the hardware to use. I have to use
slmodemd --alsa hw:0,6 --country USA
to make it work on my system. You may be able to get it to work with
just
slmodemd --alsa --country USA
The defaults used there should work, but for some reason my modem is
not mapped to the modem device slmodemd expects when using the alsa
option.
