Thanks for the sympathy! I see it as an opportunity to open it up know
and see how it all works ;-). I'm pretty sure I will need to replace the
motherboard as the graphics card is one piece with it. Later I will let
the ubuntu people know, as I hope that it is any easy fix for them to
adjust the toshutils(?) to run the fan more often. Can anyone suggest a
good replacement toshiba if the repairs are to expensive? I want to keep
running linux but can't afford to go through computers at this rate!

I have wondered about that. I run computer simulations on my laptop and
they can take minutes or hours to complete. I'm using GNU Octave  under
Ubuntu 5.10.

I've seen the CPU temp stay between 70-75C (via the handy sensors
applet). I put sleep() commands in my code at places in order to let the
CPU cool a bit between iterations of the simulation.

Even so, if there is a problem (bug), I can sometimes come back and find
the CPU has hit 80C. It still responds to killing the simulation
thankfully and cools itself back down to normal...50-55C.

Perhaps because my simulations are not involving the graphics card
(indeed, I blank the display rather than leave it on the funky
screensaver) I haven't had a problem with it.

Sorry to hear you fried the computer, Andy. (No doubt you this, but you
can still get your important data off it.)
