Hardware: Toshiba Satellite A105-S4074.
Controller: Intel PRO/100 VE (8086:1092)
Linux: Debian 3.1r2, 2.6.8 kernel
Drivers: e100, eepro100
Problem: bad EEPROM checksum
Question: remedy?  driver fix, controller replacement?

Hi, all.

I am trying to use Debian Linux on my shiny new Toshiba Satellite
A105-S4074.  The Ethernet controller is an Intel PRO/100 VE.

I have successfully compiled the 2.6.8 kernel, but I have not succeeded in
getting the Ethernet controller to work.

The e100 module and eepro100 modules shipped with the Debian 3.1r2 distro
do not recognize the 1092 controller identifier.

I downloaded, built, and installed the latest e100 from Intel; it reports
a bad checksum.  When I patch it to ignore the bad checksum, it gets a bad
MAC address and can't continue.

I patched the eepro100 module to recognize the 1092 identifier; it also
reports a bad checksum.

All the Web searching I've done indicates that the EEPROM checksum error
means... a bad EEPROM, and that the remedy is vendor replacement. 
However, the controller works with Windows XP Media Edition which shipped
with the laptop.  I welcome any suggestions or advice.
