Just use ACPI for monitoring CPU temperature with cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THZN/temperature. My S1 got its 5th replacement-system-board about 3 month ago. Only the first system-board of this machine died of something which looked like an overheating graphics-chip. The fan did turn on though. Two system-boards had to be replaced as the system-boards I got as replacement for another one were defective. One system-board was replaced because the system-fan died. And the last system-board was replaced while trying to repair a dying harddisk. The dying harddisk was replaced during another repair.
