Agreed, use a live CD.

Puppy (puppylinux.org) or Knoppix will both work, in addition to ubunto
that Renato recommended.

Try these:

Boot the live CD.  Both your hard drive and your USB device should be
seen by the OS but they should not be mounted.  

'hard drive die' is a little light on hard information.  What went
wrong?  I've had drives go south and found that the problem wasn't the
drive but the hard drive _controller_.

The first thing I'd do is fsck the hard drive.  The executables are
in /sbin.  A review of the man pages before you start is in order.  The
Fedora Rescue DVD should also have all of these executables.

You might extract the drive from your machine and swap it into a
different laptop and see if it works ... at least long enough to get
what you want off.  I've had success doing this when it was the
controller that failed rather than the drive itself.

I'm quite familiar with Puppy and modestly so with Knoppix.  Both
should allow you to mount the drives and copy from one to another.
Puppy has a mount utility tool that allows you to mount each drive
positively (it's a front end GUI panel for the mount command).  Knoppix
should show each drive as an icon on the desktop; clicking on it will
bring up a mount option.
