Yes, it should be a Core2 Duo CPU, and /proc/cpuinfo indeed reports two
logical CPUs. So far, so good.

I came across the same hint, but unfortunately, it doesn't apply to my
environment as the stock Ubuntu kernels are per default built with SMP
support:

I won't really hesitate building my own kernel for that matter (even
though I prefer sticking with the one provided by the package
repository), but it seems this won't get me out of trouble here...
