I tried this when I first got the machine (in fact, I even tried to
figure out how to expose the fan control mechanism via the bios but
wasn't able to) and I've never had any success at it (tried it again
after seeing that gentoo forum explanation as well).  I've been
working off the 2.4 BIOS with a 2.6.17 kernel and patched alsa drivers
that play full sound with acpi=off.  It's possible that slight
differences in models (conexant codec versions, etc) accounts for why
it doesn't work for everyone.

Is that the same fan speed that you get with acpi=off or a slower speed?
