Check if this difference between Windows and Linux occour in equalizer 
available in Windows (and not in Linux).

This option (equalizer, echo, effects) is ON in sound card software and 
Windows Media Player.

Please, try this:
Open /etc/apt/sources.list (as root) and insert this lines below:

deb http://linorg.usp.br/debian-marillat/ stable main
deb-src http://linorg.usp.br/debian-marillat/ stable main

This is a brazilian mirror of maintenner Marillat (multimedia to debian).

Now, use:
#aptitude update
#aptitude upgrade
#aptitude install w32codecs
