There is a growing population of bootable CD Linuxes (and a couple of bootable BSDs too).  

My personal favorite is puppylinux (see puppylinux.org).  Puppy boots from CD, it also installs easily to USB sticks (as well as conventionally to hard drives -- got both on older laptops).  Scripts to remaster the CD ...  

I'm not familiar with Kanotix but there are certainly opportunities to run up several flavors of Linux before you do anything to your hard drive.
