If your wait until your gpu gets *really* hot (> 100 degrees C) in
linux, then you reboot into windows, and then quickly back into linux,
it seems the bios puts the gpu fan in some preventative always
spinning state.

That's probably why it worked for you. It will stay in this state
until you boot windows again or take the battery out.
