[tlinux-users:08810] Tecra M1 failing to restore from suspend

I have been using suspend-to-RAM and restore on my Tecra M1 laptop
for a few years now, for most of which time it has worked reliably.

However I am now getting resume failures on wakeup, not every time
but, with a fairly random probability. Failure seems to be most 
frequent after a long or overnight shutdown. (I don't suspect
a power problem - it just had a new battery, and this even happens
with the main power plugged in.)

The message is

RESUME FAILURE - Hit any key to continue.

Unfortunately no further diagnostics for the reason for the failure
are printed.

The things that have changed on the machine recently are

a) New battery pack as the old one was failing to hold much charge.
b) Upgrade of the O/S to Mandriva 2008 which uses the newer "pm_utils"
   to manage suspend/restore.
c) It got older!

Does anyone have any suggestions about the cause of the resume failures,
or any idea how to obtain further diagnostic information?
Suspend-to-disk and restore works reliably, but this is obviously slower
and less convenient.
