minimal hardware requirements for directors?

Hello,

The good news is the directors seem to be working, but
the bad news is they are unresponsive when accessed
via ssh from a workstation with a monitor.  

The directors are headless, low-end pentium 2's.  I
can access them OK if I plug in a keyboard and
monitor, but that is not convenient.  

I was following the configuration instructions for
high availablity and load balanced, here:

I got as far as stopping ldirectord and starting
heartbeat.  At that point, the computer became mostly
unresponsive over ssh.  

The computer did wake up for a moment, and while
responsive momentarily, I did verify that heartbeat
had brought up the virtual IP address on the main
director. 

For ssh access, do the directors need more horsepower?
 I could upgrade them as necessary, but I had assumed
that low-end P2's would be adequate.
