If you have a system that uses ldirector/ipvsadm to configre LVS in the
kernel to load balance connections to real-servers, then the
real-servers will either not be able to connect to the VIP or always
connect to themselves if you use LVS-NAT (masq) or LVS-DR (gate)
respectively.

If you just have a system that uses heartbeat for high availability,
and you have not configured LVS, then you will not have this problem.

In terms of the documentation on UltraMonkey.Org, 
here is how the topoliges are affected by this:

Not Affected it does not use LVS:
  High Availability

Real-Servers can't connect to VIP as LVS-NAT is used:
  Load Balancing
  High Availability and Load Balancing

Real-Servers always connect to themselves when connecting to the VIP
because LVS-DR is used:
  High Capacity Highly Availability and Load Balancing
  Streamline Highly Availability and Load Balancing
