I use a mixture of MON & SNMP for health checks and automated emails when
certain services (http, ftp, mysql) or servers (fping, full root, kernel
crash, etc) are down, and I use Ganglia for realtime graphical reporting.
They all work together nicely with my ultramonkey setup.

Im sure you could roll your own checks and emails based on the code, but
hey, mon&snmp are great at this and easy to use, and in production on
thousands of servers Im sure.

I would highly recommend this book on "Linux Enterprise Clusters" as a good
start if you are wanting to automate administration of your cluster... And
use ultramonkey.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1593270364/orthodoxtv-20

It covers mon, snmp, ganglia, automating updates, cloning systems, LVS,
ivpsadm, heartbeat, etc, et al, ad infinitum.

And yes, you'll be giving me a couple cents if you click on the link, but
hey, that's what I get for doing my part in recommending what I consider to
be A GREAT book on your topic.

Armed with this book and Horms' documentation at Ultramonkey.org, I was able
to build a completely automated
load-balancing/high-availability/self-checking cluster that pages me when
services or servers are pulled from the queue and emails me when things
arent right, and now I can sleep at night :=)

I started my search at the LVS website and lost my way... There was just too
much there for someone new to Loadbalancing/HA/DR/AUTOMATION concepts.

Ultramonkey and this book saved me.

And I thought I would only ever need to read Oreilly books...

Subject: Notification in Ultramonkey

I am running 2.x and 3.0 on Redhat 8.0, 9.0 and RHEL 3.0 respectively.
Direct Routing is used with http, https and smtp. It's been great.
I am wondering if there is notification which could be configured, i.e. a
web server is down or up or something like that.

Thanks,

Josh
