You don't need that much ram:

This is a 1U CentOS 4 server with 1 GB of ram and as you can see, it's 
only using about 256MB.  I think if you have a minimum of 512 MB, it 
will be more than adequate.

I'm using UM3 LDs with both HA and LB serving a farm of 8 web servers 
but the web servers are only running at 1/2 load, so we could have 
gotten by with 4-6 as you are talking about.  The more important feature 
of your LB is the NIC, IMHO.  These servers have gigabit in order to 
reduce the bottleneck of throughput as bandwidth begins to push over 100 MB.
