I meant "coming along with the paper", i.e. the software residing on
the same page and described in the paper. However, the active-active
does not seem to entirely answer my question, if I correctly
understand. The reason being that the logic for balancing between the
active directors is fixed. What I am trying to achieve is to have
another VIP on top of the two active directors and control via
standard weights how much traffic goes to each director, and then, for
each director, how much of it goes to each real server.

In other words, be able to forward CIP->VIP1->VIP2->RIP.

I tried all possible configurations, including NAT only. The latter
seems the one that "should" work, since VIP2 is also a "real server",
and the director and real server settings in this config do not seem
to be in conflict. In any case, is this what you meant when saying
that "multi-tier set-ups should work"? Do you have any advice in this
direction that I am pursuing?

I think the problem is between the VIP1 and VIP2. If I could only pass
the client request in VIP2 in such a way that it "looks like" it is
for the VIP2 service, and not for the local port, then it should get
forwarded to the RIP (hopefully).
