The web server and the browsing machine *are* on the same physical
subnet, right?  It's pretty much doomed to failure otherwise....

Also, you might want to run Ethereal or similar to capture the traffic, and
see what the browser is actually sending in the HTTP headers - I'm willing
to bet that it's sending something busticated (for instance, failing to trim
the %eth0 off before sending it along)....
