Dear USAGI folk, Thanks for your help. GRUB prints out its info from grub/menu.lst correctly, then comes the uncompress, then boot, then nothing. I've done many make xconfig's, the last using a different computer, with slightly different peripherals. Vz.: make mrproper make xconfig (or make gconfig) make make modules make modules_install make install mkinitrd I do get errors about non-existent intermediate files and lack of dependencies for drivers in mkinitrd, but no absolute failures. I've worked with kernel code before, so if anyone has suggestions about what to look for, I could try patches. It could be something messy, like hardware the kernel isn't prepared for. The newer commodity PCs have new hardware attached.
