The receiver sends "I can do fine mode" or "I can not do fine mode", and
then the sender selects a suitable combination of what the sender wants
and what the receiver can do.

So if you want all your faxes to have the *same* aspect ratio, you need
to force your site to "normal mode only" - because there is no way you
can force a sender to "fine resolution" if he doesn't want that.


I think the interesting bit is "how can the receiver know what the
sender decided" - I don't know what exactly how your fax reception
setup looks like, and whether this information is available to "the
user".

In other faxing environments, the resolution is stored in the TIF header
(Hylafax) or in the fax file name (ff... vs. fn..., mgetty)...
