It is definitely possible, though it may prove more work than you'd like. But that's just because the user base has become so small. Anyway, it depends more on the distribution than the kernel. I can say from personal experience that an ISDN-friendly distribution like SuSE stays ISDN-friendly even if you replace the distribution kernel with a self-compiled vanilla kernel the latest version.
