What difference does it make, where the list is hosted(*)

I'm genuinely curious, because things should be open and transparent 
enought that it doesn't.  I'm open to the idea that perceptions may not 
be close to reality here.

(*) Discounting the quality of such hosting, let's leave that out of the 
discussion for now.
