... and k3b 1.0.5 seems to have solved this problem: 9 dvd
burn-and-verify sessions so far without a hitch.  From k3b home
(http://k3b.plainblack.com/), this is one of the three bugfixes:

Always wait for the drive to become ready before starting verification
(this should fix some of the problems with failed verification where K3b
claims that no medium is in the drive.)

-although I never saw it make this claim before.  Now I do, very briefly.
