Secondary LB alerts

Is it possible to have the slave server not do email alerts unless it
becomes master?  Also does anyone have a best practice for handling
maintenance?

It seems that we get bombarded by email when we do maintenance.  The
keepalived does the right thing and puts connections to our sorry server but
we get a email for each server 2x that it went down and 2x that it went up.
