My original email message even contained those fake spaces :-)
Running it through cat -v shows:

vrrp_script chk_haproxy {
=A0=A0=A0=A0script "/usr/bin/killall -0 haproxy"
=A0=A0=A0=A0interval 9
    timeout 3
=A0=A0=A0=A0weight 20
    rise 2
    fall 4
}


Hopefully this helps someone sometime.
