I thought it would not work because both keepalived process got no VRRP
messages from each other. Turned out that the firewalls were configured
with specific IP addresses for VRRP that were not used by keepalived to
send the updates.

A quick search on the Internet returned mixed results, so I presumed
that VLANs on top of bonding will not work.
