I've also seen a lot of hosts using a uname.nodename "(none)", "unknown" or "localhost", so solely relying on that information isn't good as well :) If /etc/hosts isn't configured properly, a system may generate tons of DNS queries, asking for its own name or IP address. Not just because of keepalived, but also various other daemons and software does use the systems canonical name. The best situation is where the system doesn't have access to DNS at all: everything is going to fail :) Whenever part of the network fails or the DNS resolver is temporarily broken, one can expect those DNS queries to fail as well, including any applications relying on that information. The point is: other applications do rely on this information as well. So why don't fix it right there? The fix is simple and pretty straight-forward. I don't see a faulty behaviour which requires a fix in keepalived and do expect other applications misbehaving as well in such a situation. Another option were to change the defaults to hardcoded ones, which literally ask for being changed. About anyone in my area will want to change a line 'email_from root@localhost' to something meaningful.
