I'm using LTT (original) on my 2.6.11 on MIPS. I only started using LTTng on a 2.6.16 kernel (and not on the MIPS platform). My experience is that the instrumentation points are not too different between LTT and LTTng, and that it is relatively straightforward to convert from LTT to LTTng, as longs are your board support (that is, your arch-specific instrumentation points) is OK. When I converted from LTT to LTTng on 2.6.16, it was not terribly difficult, but it did take a few weeks (if I recall correctly).
