I just checked the versions of lighttpd in the two versions you mentioned

7.0.3 1.4.57
7.1.1r1 1.4.59

and

7.1.1 1.4.61

Now anywhere in this release chain there may be a hidden bug. The only 
way to check if this is in lighttpd or somewhere else would be to step 
back with the lighttpd release to what was running in 7.0.3 and then 
follow back up. Or possibly look at the change log of lighttpd to see if 
one can find anything meaningful there. I doubt it though.

One thing for sure you should check is the access log. Maybe there is an 
indication of this error.
