Hi ET,

I have seen something like this behaviour and tracked it down to my backup 
procedure.
What I found was that if I accidently included the syslinux directory when 
backing up from partition 2 to partition 3 you can mess up the UUID's found in 
the syslinux.cfg files.  

Rsync will do this for you very easily, now I use cp /mnt/current /mnt/bak so 
it does not take the syslinux subdir.
