Once upon a time there was syslog and programmers were happy because the 
underlying routines helped them logging stuff. But there was a small 
group of unhappy programmers who thought they could do better, so they 
wrote their own logging routines. Not all of them were portable, neither 
were they all perfect, so many different dialects and even long 
forgotten routines were invented. So many hacking hours later 
administrators were unhappy but they were just marginalized and the 
inventors of all the various logging dialects never thought about 
standardizing and consolidating their stuff to eventually integrate it 
into syslog or replace syslog entirely. And now it is a mess and 
everybody is unhappy.

New syslog servers unfortunately tend to invent new configuration 
syntaxes without caring for portability and this without really 
improving anything but forcing new configuration languages that better 
meet new theories learned in class. Again users are not happy. And in 
some cases the new configuration stuff leads to a pretty steep learning 
curve. but this is true for many applications and is not making life easier.

We should try to use syslog wherever we can. It certainly is not perfect 
but then what is?
