To get daemon.log working again, I restarted dnsmasq - with no success.
So I restarted rsyslog - with a surprising insight:

# /etc/init.d/rsyslog restart
Stopping rsyslog daemon: FAIL
Starting rsyslog daemon: OK

daemon.log active again, but stopping rsyslgd failed??
