If this board behaves like my APU2C2, it can boot from a USB key or an SD card. If you have no SSD inserted, the USB key will be recognized as /dev/sda1, but if you are using a SD card in the SD card slot, it will be /dev/mmcplk0p1… This is what I meant by checking your LEAFCFG and PKGPATH variables in syslinux.cfg and in leaf.cfg… make them point to the right device.

I would suggest you boot from a USB key, generated with any x86_64_serial image and then use Erich’s “leafinstall” script to generate a dual boot on your SD card. The USB key will be detected as /dev/sda1 and this is what the tarball image uses by default. You can manually change /dev/sda1 to /dev/mmcblk0p1 but using “leafinstall” will do that for you.

Even though the whole documentation is not finished for LEAF 7.x, the part that describe how to install to a SD card or USB is basically completed.
