You have told us how you successfully built the new kernel, but not
how you ran the build which apparently failed.

What commands did you use ?

Was it a freshly extracted directory ?

My general recommendation to update the kernel, if you have a
working kernel config for the LFS system on that real machine or in
that VM is:

1. Use fresh source.

2. Copy your .config (for me, zcat /proc/config.gz >.config)

3. make oldconfig.

Using a .config from a successful build of LFS on the same machine,
with 'make oldconfig' should always be straightforward IF the kernel
source is fresh, although you will of course have to answer
questions about new options in a new kernel version.
