Right.  The ./xinitrc used was:

export XDG_SESSION_TYPE=wayland
exec dbus-run-session gnome-session

This never worked of course

But then I loaded up lightdm-1.32.0 which works, boots straight into Gnome.
I've used this before and it seems reliable, easier than gdm.

Why does this work though?   What's wrong with the boot from startx?
