All I can offer are two long shots:
- log in as "dave" in a VT.  Then, in your home-directory:
  - rm -r .cache/*
  - log out and try to launch a Plasma (-wayland) session

- If that doesn't help:
  - create a new user and try to start Plasma as that user

If none of the above helps, meticulously check whether every step you
took up to and including installing Plasma was in accordance with the
book(s).
