glib-2/gobject-introspection: what is a "gi-build"?

Please give me a clue: what is a "gi-build"?  I couldn't find anything
about it in the book, above mentioned packages'
build-options/documentation or on the internet.

And shouldn't something obviously arcane like this be explained in the
book, when used?
