I recently built an LFS/BLFS systemd and I found that after installing
xfce4-session I had to rebuild and reinstall dbus to start xfce with
startx, I think because when I built dbus with LFS dbus-launch was not
built because xorg had not been installed at that point.

I'm not sure if that is your issue but something to check.
