Turns out the issue was my /etc/asound.conf. Apparently setting
pcm.default directly now confuses Firefox (I think because that means
only one application can own it at a time?). Anyway, switching to
setting ALSA_CARD (and letting ALSA's default configuration handle the
rest) has solved it. Thanks!
