Create a sufficiently big partition for an experimental system and copy
your current system to it.  Adapt your grub.cfg and fstab.  Then try the
update there, strictly following the instructions in ch. 8.5 in LFS-12.4
or later.  That way you wouldn't compromise your main system if
something goes wrong.
