xfce4 causes a core dump and libwnck to bail out

the specific wnck error is
Wnck:ERROR:../libwnck/xutils.c:1510:default_icon_at_size: assertion
failed: (base) which shows up twice in the error log (see here:
https://micos.paxtonpenguin.com/x-session-errors), the core dump seems
to be related to libwnck so it's entirely libwnck's fault
any help figuring this out would be appreciated
