For example there are && after

cat > /etc/pam.d/system-account << "EOF" &&

Which are quite useless as there is a blank line after the && statement.
It also happens in a number of the other places && is used as well.

In general the && doesn't contribute much of anything towards building 
the particular package.

They are not used in the LFS book and really shouldn't be in the BLFS 
book either.
