Thanks for that :-)   I hadn't come across encap before, so that was 
really interesting, but it doesn't quite fit the bill, unfortunately.  I 
was thinking that, by doing the configure/make/install cycle in a 
chroot, you'd remove the need to hand edit makefiles etc. - and encap 
quite specifically states that you'd still need to do this with some 
packages.

Still, it's something for me to bear in mind  :-)
